A good week for soybean exports

USDA reports weekly grain and oilseed export sales were all within pre-report estimates. Physical shipments of soybeans for the week ending December 16 were larger than what’s needed weekly to meet USDA projections for the 2010/11 marketing year but corn and wheat fell short of their respective marks.

Soybeans were pegged at 827,800 tons (30.4 million bushels), a steep increase from the week before and 21% above the four week average. China bought the vast majority of the total at 637,300 tons but unknown destinations did cancel on 358,300 tons. For the marketing year to date, soybean sales are 1.261 billion bushels, compared to 1.128 billion this time last year.

IN corn and soybean groups name new Exec.

Jane Ade Stevens has been named the new Executive Director of the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA), Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC) and Indiana Corn Growers Association (ICGA).

In addition to leading the state’s soybean and corn checkoff programs, Stevens will also be responsible for membership and policy activities of ISA and the ICGA.

OSU’s Beuerlein honored

The Ohio Soybean Council (OSC) has presented their 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award to retired Ohio State University Extension agronomist Jim Beuerlein. Beuerlein received the award for his contributions to Ohio’s soybean farmers over his 39 years at Ohio State.

Roberts could be Senate Ag ranking member

Reports out of Washington indicate that, if Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss becomes the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee—which he is expected to do—then Kansas Senator Pat Roberts will take over as ranking GOP member on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Soybean yield/quality winners announced in Ohio

The Ohio Soybean Association (OSA) has named the winners in the 2010 Ohio Soybean Yield and Quality Contest. This was the first year for the contest.

The overall state yield winner was Don Jackson from Preble County with a yield of 81.699 using conventional tillage. Topping the no-till category was Lowell Lavy of Miami County with a yield of 77.702.

Soy flour headed to Afghanistan

Five containers of soy flour are headed to Afghanistan. Purchased by the USDA as part of its cooperative agreement with the American Soybean Association (ASA) under the USDA Food for Progress Program, the soy flour will provide high-protein soy to 5,000 women and their families in Afghanistan.

Lucas names House Ag Subcommittee chairs

The next chair of the House Agriculture Committee has named his subcommittee chairs. Frank Lucas says Bob Goodlatte of Virginia will serve as Vice Chair of the Ag Committee.

 Chairman Lucas says those selected have demonstrated a commitment to ensuring the success of American agriculture and rural economies. “The next year will be an exercise in educating our freshmen members on both sides of the aisle, providing oversight of the administration, and building a strong working relationship as we prepare to reauthorize the farm bill in 2012.”

Another week of solid soybean export inspections

Soybean inspections for the week ending December 16 were larger than expected while wheat was within projections and corn was smaller than all estimates. Inspections of soybeans were above what’s needed weekly to meet USDA projections for the 2010/11 marketing year but corn and wheat fell short of their respective marks.

Soybeans were pegged at 44.602 million bushels, 13,000 less than the prior week but 10.549 million more than last year. So far this marketing year, soybean inspections are 725.726 million bushels, compared to 649.534 million a year ago.

Informa expects increased soybean acreage in 2011

Informa has soybean planting for next year at 77.565 million acres, up more than two million from the November guess and about 250,000 larger than USDA’s 2010 estimate.

Corn is pegged at 90.755 million acres, 2.3 million below the November projection but up more than two million from USDA’s 2010 total.

Also, Informa has this year’s soybean crop at 3.377 billion bushels, 2 million larger than USDA’s most recent estimate, and corn is pegged at 12.539 billion bushels, down slightly from USDA’s last guess.

USDA’s winter wheat planting estimates and supply and demand update are out January 12 and the first 2011 corn and soybean acreage estimates are due out in March.

Weekly wheat sales top pre-report estimates

 USDA reports wheat and soybean oil exports for the week ending December 9 were larger than expected while corn and soybean meal were inside projections and soybeans were well below all estimates. Physical shipments of soybeans were larger than what’s needed weekly to meet USDA projections for the 2010/11 marketing year but corn and wheat fell short of their respective marks.

Soybeans were pegged at 84,600 tons (3.1 million bushels), a substantial drop from the week before and the four week average. Still, so far this marketing year, sales are 1.230 billion bushels, compared to 1.084 billion this time last year.
